Hundreds of senior citizens turned out at Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay last Friday (May 29), as the Ministry’s officially launched the Park Walker Initiative, a programme aimed at encouraging older Jamaicans (60 years and older) to remain physically active, socially connected, and mentally engaged. The initiative forms part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among the nation's ageing population while promoting healthy and active ageing.
State Minister in the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Hon. Krystal Lee, MP who delivered the keynote address, emphasized the importance of creating programmes that support the health and well-being of older adults. "Healthy ageing is not simply about living longer; it is about ensuring that our senior citizens are able to enjoy a good quality of life. The Park Walker Initiative creates opportunities for older Jamaicans to improve their health, build social connections and remain active participants in their communities. This initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to supporting our seniors and empowering them to take charge of their health," said Minister Lee.
Participants engaged in a range of wellness activities throughout the day, including organized walks, health screenings, stretching exercises, dance aerobics, wellness education sessions, and interactive health promotion activities. Seniors also received information on healthy eating, chronic disease prevention, and the importance of routine health checks.
Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., was also on hand to support the initiative and commended the Ministry of Health & Wellness and its partners for focusing attention on the needs of older Jamaicans. "Our senior citizens have made invaluable contributions to the development of Jamaica, and it is important that we continue to invest in initiatives that support their health, independence and overall well-being. The Park Walker Initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when we work together to create opportunities for active and healthy ageing," said Minister Charles.
Beyond the launch, the Ministry aims to establish sustainable walking groups across the island and strengthen community-based support systems that encourage seniors to remain physically active and socially engaged. The long-term goal is to foster a culture of healthy ageing and active living while reducing the impact of non-communicable diseases among Jamaica's senior population.
The initiative is being implemented through a partnership involving the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA), National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC), HEART/NSTA Trust, National Health Fund (NHF), Heart Foundation of Jamaica, Diabetes Association of Jamaica, and other stakeholders committed to improving the health and quality of life of older adults.
