The Ministry of Health & Wellness is reminding the public that the Influenza (Flu) vaccine is currently available free of cost at health centres across Jamaica, as part of ongoing efforts to protect public health, particularly as flu cases normally spike during December to March and may continue to May.

Influenza is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and close personal contact. The virus circulates globally and can affect individuals of all ages. Common symptoms include fever or chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, and a runny or congested nose.

“Influenza should not be taken lightly, as it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, blood infections, and seizures in children, and can worsen existing heart or lung diseases,” cautioned, Dr. Jacqueline Bisasor-Mckenzie, CD, Chief Medical Officer.

Within the public health system, the flu vaccine is prioritized for specific groups, including healthcare workers; children and elderly persons with chronic illnesses; pregnant women; individuals who are institutionalised or in state care; and other frontline workers. However all members of the public are encourage to take the flu vaccine

The Ministry is also encouraging private healthcare providers to source influenza vaccines through private distributors to ensure even wider access for members of the general population. Vaccination remains one of the most effective measures to reduce severe illness and prevent complications due to the flu.
