The Ministry of Health & Wellness, in collaboration with the Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA), on Friday, (June 5) hosted a World Food Safety Day Expo at Cecil Charlton Park in Mandeville, bringing together stakeholders, students, food handlers, and members of the public to promote the importance of food safety and public health.

World Food Safety Day is observed annually on June 7 and serves as a global reminder of the critical role safe food plays in protecting health and preventing disease. This year's observance is being held under the theme, "From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere."

The expo featured interactive demonstrations by the region's Public Health Inspectors, showcasing proper food handling, storage, and sanitation practices designed to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Patrons also benefited from educational booths hosted by several key partners, including the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, National Compliance and Regulatory Authority (NCRA), National Water Commission (NWC), and HEART/NSTA Trust.

A major highlight of the day's activities was the student quiz and jingle competition, which saw participation from primary and secondary schools across the region. New Forest Primary & Infant School emerged victorious in the primary school Jingle competition, while Bellefield High School secured top honours in the secondary school quiz competition.

Attendees were also engaged through a panel discussion focused on food safety measures and procedures, providing valuable information on maintaining food safety standards from farm to table.

In addition to the educational activities, members of the public were able to conveniently renew their food handlers' permits and access free HIV testing services on-site.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness and the Southern Regional Health Authority thank all participating agencies, schools, exhibitors, and patrons for supporting this important initiative. The observance reinforces the collective responsibility of government agencies, food businesses, and consumers to ensure that food remains safe at every stage of the food chain.

As Jamaica joins the international community in commemorating World Food Safety Day 2026, citizens are encouraged to continue adopting safe food handling practices to protect their health, their families, and their communities.
